The Four Horsemen, a magic super-group led by the charismatic ATLAS (Jesse Eisenberg), perform a pair of high-tech magic shows, first astonishing audiences by robbing a bank on another continent, and then exposing a white-collar criminal and funneling his millions into the audience members’ bank accounts.

FBI Special Agent DYLAN (Mark Ruffalo) is determined to make the magicians pay for their crimes—and to stop them before they pull off what promises to be an even more audacious heist. But he’s forced to partner with ALMA (Melanie Laurent), an Interpol detective about whom he is instantly suspicious. Out of desperation he turns to THADDEUS (Morgan Freeman), a famed magic debunker, who claims the bank heist was accomplished using disguises and video trickery. One thing Dylan and Alma agree on is that the Horsemen must have an outside point person, and that finding him (or her) is key to ending the magicians’ crime spree. Could it be Thaddeus? Or Alma? Or could it really be…magic?

As pressure mounts and the world awaits the Horsemen’s spectacular final trick, Dylan and Alma race to find an answer. But it soon becomes painfully clear that staying one step ahead of these masters of illusion is beyond the skills of any one man—or woman.

Trivia

• Amanda Seyfried and Andrea Riseborough were both considered for the role of Henley. A deal could not be reached with Seyfried, and so Isla was cast instead.

• Entertainment Tonight provided the first live-action look at the filming, releasing a behind the scenes featurette in the middle of April 2012.

Quotes: Isla, Cast & Crew

Isla Fisher: “We are kind of modern-day Robin Hoods. We’re getting back at corporate greed and we’re distributing the wealth and we’re essentially kind of anarchists, good guys, good magicians, righting the wrongs of the world.”

Isla Fisher: “So many things can go wrong on something like this. And I was doing the scene in high heels.” (on her entrance scene)

Isla Fisher: “There were a few dodgy moments where I panicked that I couldn`t get out of the tank. I`d think, `So this is how I go. Didn`t see that one coming! It felt great when the director said to me, `You know, I`ve had actors before who wouldn`t feel comfortable doing the stunts that you felt comfortable doing’.”

Isla Fisher: “If something really terrifies me and I think I`m going to ruin it, then I`m going to do it. Like `Now You See Me`, where I`m playing this sexy magician who swims with piranhas. I`m like, why would I be offered that role? I don`t see myself as particularly brave or sultry, which is what was called for. So I took the job because it`s interesting.”

Isla Fisher: “I don’t see myself as particularly brave. I rely on gut instinct to accept a role. If something terrifies me I am going to do it. The director said to me, ‘Wow. I’ve worked with so many actors on big action movies, and you’re the only one who’s done all their own stunts.’ I said I didn’t know I had a choice. I thought you just had to get on with it. It’s the Australian way.”

Isla Fisher: “I was chained under water. They had a guy who was off camera, but he was a long way away with a can of oxygen. By the time I realised I couldn’t get up and beckoned for him, I realised that I had run out of air. I had a quick release on my wrists and a quick release on my feet but the chain that was tying my wrists to my ankles . . . it got looped around the bottom of the tank. I’d already been under for 2½ minutes and I couldn’t get up for air. Luckily, I managed to get free and stay level-headed and got out before it went even more horribly wrong. No one wants to go in a swimming costume.

Isla Fisher: “…always pulling back, finding the reality and going no further than that.” (on Jesse Eisenberg)

Louis Leterrier: “We dropped Isla Fisher into a tank of water with really heavy chains around her. She was under water for two-and-a-half minutes during one take.”

David Kwong (magic consultant): “She was a workhorse. She learned to hold her breath for the water escape. She really does go down in that water in those shackles. It was incredible to see her perseverance and her work ethic.”
